Choosing the right size for your menstrual cup can be a bit confusing, and overwhelming. After all, it's not that easy to just get out a tape measure, or "try before you buy" with a menstrual cup. Every woman's anatomy is different. We have different angles, different levels of elasticity and vaginal canal length, and every cervix is in a slightly different position. This even changes for one woman from one day to the next! So how to decide? Ultimately, most women will find they can actually adjust to either the model 1 or model 2. There isn't a massive difference between the models, about 4mm in length, and 6mm in diameter. The capacity is different (about 10ml), which is why the best measure of what cup to get is based on your flow. We do recommend for very young women, going with the lunette model 1 as it has the softest silicone and is therefore the easiest to insert, and for women with a very high flow, going with the Juju model 2 as it creates an excellent leak-proof seal for higher flow.
The amount of flow
This is the most important factor when choosing the right cup: the bigger cup is best for a heavier flow, and the smaller cup for a lighter flow. A heavy flow is commonly considered as needing to change a super tampon more often than once every two to three hours.
Below is some detailed information and recommendations from both manufacturers we stock.

Juju says: JuJu is available in two models and can be used by women of all ages. Sizes are generally based on childbearing history but many other factors such as anatomy, age and pelvic floor tone may influence your cup size selection. Childbearing Model 1 Women who HAVE NOT had a vaginal birth Model 2 Women who HAVE had a vaginal birth Please note that the sizing recommendations should be used as a guide only. If you have had a caesarean birth a Model 1 or Model 2 JuJu may be suitable. When selecting a Model number, please also consider the other factors below in conjunction with childbearing history. If you have had vaginal corrective surgery you may wish to consider a Model 1. Virgins and young women A Model 1 JuJu is recommended for virgins and sexually active young women. Build If you have a petite or small build, you may wish to consider a Model 1 JuJu. If you have a larger build, you may wish to consider a Model 2 JuJu. Anatomy If you have a low cervix or short vaginal canal, a Model 1 may suit you well. If you have high cervix or long vaginal canal, a Model 2 may be better suited to your anatomy. If you have any gynaecological concerns, such as a particularly long or narrow vaginal canal, we recommend you seek the advice of your medical practitioner prior to using JuJu to see if it is suitable for you. Age Some women may lose vaginal and pelvic floor tone due to hormonal changes or age. In this case a Model 2 may be a preferred choice. Pelvic floor tone and exercise If you have particularly strong pelvic floor tone due to practising regular Kegel exercises or other activities such as pilates, yoga or dance you may wish to consider a Model 1, regardless of childbearing history or age. |
Lunette says: Team Lunette doesn’t believe that one-cup fits all: for instance, we’ve seen 14-year old virgins loving the larger Lunette, and middle-aged women who prefer the smaller one. Although most women can use either cup, helping you find the one that's most comfortable for your body is our sacred goal! In search of the perfect fit: considerations Pregnancy Pregnancy and hormones change the vaginal muscles, the shape of the vagina, and hipbone structure. For all our Mums out there, we recommend the Lunette Cup Model 2, to flex with you and your bodies' life changes. Anatomy Since every woman's anatomy is different, we sometimes recommend the smaller cup for heavier flow and vice versa. This can depend on: Age We designed the smaller Lunette Cup Model 1 as a ‘starter cup’ for younger women with tighter vaginal muscles to make insertion easier. As we age, muscles lose elasticity and we experience hormonal changes, which can affect menstrual flow. Look to your body, your lifestyle, your physical fitness level and your age for your answers to help you gauge size and fit size in proportion to your flow. Many women transfer to the Lunette Cup Model 2 — the most popular choice for most adult women. Virginity We recommend the smaller Lunette Cup Model 1 for young women who have not experienced sexual intercourse yet, but still have a heavy flow. Why? Because your muscles and hymen are tighter, it’s easier to insert the smaller cup. Location Of Your Cervix Wash your hands well, and see if you can reach your cervix during menstruation. It’s easy to find, and usually located on the left side of the vaginal wall (when you touch it, it feels like the end of your nose). If your cervix sits low, it is better to choose Lunette Cup Model 1, as it’s shorter and will fit more comfortably inside your vagina. A low cervix can be touched very easily. Sports Goddess Sports that strengthen the core muscles like Yoga and Pilates also have a strengthening effect creating very strong vaginal muscles that can last a lifetime. If you’re a physical fitness goddess, consider using Lunette Cup Model 1. Sensitive Bladder If you have an extremely sensitive bladder, the softer Lunette Cup Model 1 might be a match made in heaven. Remember that most women can’t feel the cup at all, whichever size they choose, but we want to make sure you’re comfy during the day. |
