A menstrual cup is a tampon alternative. Very convenient, easy to use and safe, they are made from medical grade silicone, and collect and hold menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it. They are hypo-allergenic (safe for women with latex or rubber allergies) and do not interact with bodily fluids. Unlike tampons, they do not cause dryness or irritation and have not been associated with toxic shock syndrome, cystitis or candidiasis. The cup's capacity is three times a super tampon; so many women find they only need to empty it morning and evening. When the cup is full, it is simply removed, rinsed or wiped and reinserted. At the end of each cycle, the cup can be sterilised by boiling in water for 5 minutes. It's then stored in breathable fabric ready for the next cycle. One well cared for cup can last a woman up to ten years. You can read more about the benefits of using a menstrual cup here.
