There is a huge taboo in our society that has developed over a long time. Women are made to feel embarrassment when discussing their periods, and we are told that menstrual fluid is disgusting, smelly and shameful. The first time women use a menstrual cup they discover menstrual fluid is actually odourless. Only when the fluid interacts with the absorbent materials of tampons and pads and breeds bacteria, does it begin to smell. Women are also taught that periods should be painful and inconvenient. When using a menstrual cup, periods become far less inconvenient, and many women who previously took time away from school or work due to their period find they are able to participate more fully in life, all month long. This includes work life, school life and other activities.
Sustainable Menstruation Australia is working towards making menstrual cups accessible to women in disadvantaged situations. This lightens the load of having to afford menstrual products when on a low income, freeing up finances for essentials like food, clothing and shelter. A portion of the money from every cup sold through Sustainable Menstruation Australia goes towards this important cause. We also only source our cups from female owned, ethical companies.
Sustainable Menstruation Australia is also currently in the development phase in getting better menstrual education into Australian schools. If you are in the stage of wanting to introduce your daughter to menstruation and aren't quite sure where to start the conversation, there is an excellent children's book available on the subject, here. We will soon be stocking "my first sustainable period kit". Keep a look out for it!
